The Costa Rica Tarrazu San Rafael Bean, is characterised by its high body, low acidity, and creamy texture. So if you prefer a gentler coffee on your stomach, this bean is the way to go.
Brewing Method: French Press- This method will accentuate the coffee’s full body and creamy texture while minimizing acidity.
Ingredients:
- 30g Costa Rica Tarrazu San Rafael Bean coffee
- 500ml filtered water
- Optional: 1 small pinch of salt (to further reduce perceived acidity)
Equipment:
- Burr grinder
- French Press (600ml capacity)
- Kettle
- Scale
- Timer
- Wooden spoon or paddle
Steps:
- Grind the coffee coarsely, resembling sea salt. Consistent grind size is crucial for even extraction.
- Heat water to 200°F (93°C). This slightly lower temperature will help emphasize body and sweetness.
- If using, add the small pinch of salt to the empty French Press.
- Add the ground coffee to the French Press.
- Start your timer and pour about 60ml of water over the grounds, just enough to saturate them.
- Gently stir with a wooden spoon to ensure all grounds are wet. This “bloom” allows CO2 to escape and improves extraction.
- After 30 seconds, slowly pour the remaining water (440ml) in a circular motion.
- Place the plunger on top but don’t press down. This helps retain heat.
- At 4 minutes, gently stir the crust on top to break it.
- At 4:30, slowly press the plunger down, taking about 20-30 seconds to reach the bottom.
- Immediately pour the coffee into a warmed mug or carafe to prevent over-extraction.
- Let the coffee cool for 1-2 minutes before drinking to allow flavors to fully develop.
Tasting notes:
- First, notice the full, heavy body and creamy texture coating your palate.
- The low acidity should result in a smooth, round mouthfeel.
- Look for the plum notes, which might present as a subtle, dark fruit sweetness.
- The chocolate flavors should be prominent, providing a rich, satisfying finish.
This method should highlight the coffee’s unique characteristics by:
- Using a coarse grind and longer steep time to maximize body
- Employing a slightly lower water temperature to minimize acidity
- Utilizing the French Press to preserve oils, enhancing creaminess and body
